There are two types of dreams: the ones we dream when we fall asleep, and the ones we dream wide awake. I will only discuss the second ones, for I think the first ones have different meaning to everyone. We all have some sort of a picture of how we wish our life turns out. In most cases we want things we can’t really have. It is easier to dream a life we can’t have, because that way we live different lives in our head and in reality. During this one lifetime we have, we live several. Maybe even thousands. We die and are born again for so many times we can’t even count. But we let all those things happen inside our heads. Only few of those ideas do we let pour into our reality.
It is not easy to be real with yourself, to know your limitations. It’s one of the hardest things, to accept you are not invincible. You have limits for understanding, for kindness, for love, for everything in your life. But you get scared that if you accept those limits, you will become ordinary. So you decide to escape that with making up a life in your head which you find perfect. And you stop working on making your actual life perfect.
Do you know how you make your actual life perfect? First of all, perfection is not defined by not having any problems, or nor feeling pain ever again. It is defined by the fact you wouldn’t change anything you’ve been through. To make your life perfect, you must follow your heart, your instinct. Head has a very little say in that. When you listen to your mind only, you will stop making your dreams come true because you won’t think you can do it. I think we all have bucket lists of things we want to do in our lives. But very few start actually doing them. Probably because we think it’s silly and not something doable. But everything is doable, and never say what you want is silly. If you want it, it is not silly, it is who you are.
We give up on our dreams because we get trapped in this pattern of life. Finish school, find a job, get married, have kids. Sure, these are all the things you should do, but it doesn’t have to define you or make you give up on your dreams. We also give up on them because we are afraid we won’t succeed, and by not ever trying we will always have that option somewhere in our heads, telling ourselves it could have been, what if, and similar. Even if you fail, you will have this amazing experience, and you won’t regret failing. You tried making your dreams come true.
Write down all the things you want to do in your life, all those things you dream about. Next step is to get to know yourself, realize what your limitations are. Which one of the things on the list are realistic, and which ones are not. When I talk about limitations, I want to say that you can’t become a famous pianist in your twenties if you haven’t spent your whole life working on it, but it doesn’t mean you can’t learn to play the piano. And start making plans how to make it happen. Do research, talk to people, find out how do you make those things happen. And then just start doing it. One by one. So one day you can tell your kids how they should always do what makes them happy, and set an example for that.
And last, but not least, a lot of you dream about a certain person. Make that person a part of your list. Because making your dreams come true, and living life to the fullest means nothing if you don’t have someone to share it with.
